ARTIFACTORY: Transitioning from Cargo Git to Sparse Index Protocol

Starting from Rust’s Version 1.68,  a game-changing improvement was introduced in Cargo with the introduction of the Sparse-Index protocol. This new approach replaces the traditional Git method, to using HTTPS for interaction with the registry (Artifactory in our case).
The switch not only boosts performance significantly but also opens the door for proxy use with remote repositories, giving you more control over index database connections.

Comparison: Cargo Git vs. Sparse Indexing

Cargo Git:

In the past, Cargo figured out which crates were on crates.io by downloading and reading an "index" listing all crate versions. This index lived in a git repository on GitHub. Cargo fetched and stored it in its home directory, leveraging GitHub for updates. However, as the index grew, it hit scaling limits, causing delays in fetches and updates.

Cargo Sparse Index:

Enter the Sparse-Index protocol, shaking things up by ditching Git in favor of a direct HTTPS approach. Now, Cargo fetches files from the index specifically related to your project's crate dependencies. No need for a bulky index fetch; the Sparse protocol ‘leaps over’ the scaling issues of Git, ensuring a faster and more efficient experience when dealing with crates.io or Artifactory.

Deprecation notice:
Starting July 2024, all upcoming JFrog Artifactory versions will exclusively feature the Sparse Index Protocol by default, and the use of Git indexing will be discontinued.

FAQ:
1.  When should I expect the Sparse Index Protocol to be included in JFrog Artifactory versions by default?

A. The Sparse Index Protocol is fully integrated into JFrog Artifactory starting from version 7.46.3 onwards and Rust Version 1.68.

2.  Can I still use the Git-based approach with the new versions?

A. While older Artifactory versions (released before July 2024) used the traditional Git protocol, it's important to note that newer versions, which include the Sparse Index Protocol by default, no longer support the old Git approach.

As stated by Rust, “The Cargo team plans to eventually make this the default way to access crates.io” (or Artifactory in this case).

3.  What changes do I need to make in my configuration to adopt the Sparse Index Protocol?

A. Select the Enable sparse index support checkbox in the General Settings section of the Cargo Repository Basic tab. You may Follow our Index Cargo Repositories Using Sparse Indexing documentation for further information.
